 2023 Preview 


       Spain Park finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Spain Park finished sixth in Class 7A region three with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Spain Park was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Jaguars want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.7 points a game.

       Since 2010, Spain Park has gone a combined 78-65. Their 54.5% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 21 seasons, Spain Park has managed to compile a record of 135-100. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 7A and 119th in the AHSAA.




       The Jaguars are led by head coach Tim Vakakes who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Spain Park. The Jaguars saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Vakakes arrived. The Jaguars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Vakakes. Over the course of his career, Coach Vakakes' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship.

       The Jaguars will open the season with Brock Bradley at quarterback. Coach Vakakes thinks the strength of this team will be the wide receivers and running backs.

       The Jaguars could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Spain Park has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2017 but hope to return to the post season this year.

      Jared Smith will be returning to the defensive line and will be a leader on defense. He is considered one of the top prospects in the class of 2025.

       The Jaguars open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Calera on Friday, August 25 at Ricky M. Cairns Memorial Stadium. Last year the Calera Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 6A region three. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Hillcrest Tuscaloosa by a score of 38-0.

       Spain Park and Calera have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 2-0-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2022 with Spain Park winning by a score of 14-10.
